ASHWAGANDHA

Ashwagandha is a key herb in the Ayurvedic tradition, commonly referred to as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. Its root has a unique aroma reminiscent of horse sweat, which is reflected in its name. The Ayurvedic text ‘Bhavaprakasha’ outlines the properties of Ashwagandha in the following verse:

गन्धान्ता वाजिनामादिरश्वगन्धा हयाद्वया। वराहकर्णी वरदा बलदा कुष्ठगन्धिनी || अश्वगन्धाऽनिलश्लेष्मश्वित्रशोथक्षयापहा । बल्या रसायनी तिक्ता कपायोष्णाऽतिशुक्रला ॥ -भावप्रकाश

Known for its Rasayana (rejuvenating) and Vata-balancing qualities, Ashwagandha is recognized for its potential to alleviate stress and anxiety, and may also assist in managing diabetes. Additionally, it possesses Vajikarana (aphrodisiac) properties, which can enhance stamina and address issues like erectile dysfunction. Consuming Ashwagandha root powder with milk may help in managing male infertility and erectile dysfunction, while also serving as a nervine tonic for various neurological concerns. Importantly, Ashwagandha should be avoided during pregnancy due to the possibility of increasing uterine contractions.
